 Icarus's Place

Icarus unlocked the pair of dead bolts on the door before pushing the slightly stiff, large metal door open with a shunt of his shoulder. As the door swung open Shine slipped in happily, moving into the room as swiftly as one would if they could see. Her footsteps carried into the dark room beyond as she disappeared from sight.

Icarus sighed a little at this as he stepped in after her, flicking the switch on the wall to kick up the lights. After a few reluctant flickers the lights came on revealing the pale beige room to the pair.

The main room was fairly well sized, holding a large square table with several chairs around it as it's main feature. On one wall a long worn sofa took up most of the space, a few cushions thrown around it. A pair of cupboards stood on the other free wall, chipped and scratched in places, with various papers and smaller boxes piled around them. Two doors led off from the room, one clearly a small kitchen area with a handful of appliances and a solid worktop. The other door led into a small hallway, with other doors visible further in.

Icarus stood to one side so that Annah could come in, holding out a hand. "No idea how it holds up to your place but this is it. Bathroom is at the end of the hall so you know in advance." he spoke in a slightly disappointed voice. He was always reminded quite how basic the place was when he showed it to others.

Annah walked into the apartment, passing by Icarus who was kindly holding the door open. "Oh, don't worry about it. My place is tiny - it used to be one of those totally efficient places, where everything's right at hand. At least you can tell that you live here," she said, amused. She hated when people's places were spartan. It made sense, yes, if you were on the run or moved around a lot, but otherwise it was just strange. Everyone needed a personal place filled with comforts, and empty houses didn't provide that. "Besides..." she continued, "I kinda like beige."

She stepped further into the room, and plopped herself down on the sofa. "I'm guessing this'll be where I'm sleeping? Pretty comfortable, I'd say."

Icarus closed the door firmly once Annah was inside, bolting it shut before moving away. The area wasn't best known for it's low crime rates.

"As much as anyone can in this day and age. Keeping this place isn't exactly cheap unfortunately, but with Shine around anywhere smaller isn't exactly comfortable. It's nice and all but it keeps my budget pretty tight," he sighed a little, moving to the kitchen as Annah sat down.

"That means I can't exactly afford to decorate much, but you kinda get used to the beige after a while." From the small fridge he grabbed a bottle of juice, ignoring the various beers stashed in there for now. Then he took out a small pot of pills from a draw, shaking a pair out before replacing the pot. Finally he pulled out a pair of cups, his hand lingering over a third.

"Do you want something to drink?" He asked. "And yeah sorry, I would offer you the bed but it's the only thing I can lay on that won't break."

"Oh no, I wouldn't let you give up the bed even if your arm was featherlight. It's your house, I'm not gunna kick you out of your own bed!" Annah exclaimed, smiling. "As for a drink... I think I might like one. Get some proper liquids in my stomach before going to bed and all that."

Annah's eyes travelled around the apartment whilst Icarus fiddled with things in the kitchen area. Their apartment was pretty bland, as Ica had implied, but the sense of space made her feel wonderful. Her chest always felt tight when she thought about home, as the smallness did nothing to help her feeling mildly claustrophobic. Even being on the Strip, where the buildings were crowded together like crooked teeth, there was always the vast sky to look up at. Her apartment only had one tiny window, and she had to stand on a pile of boxes to see out of it. That was, of course, on days when there was less scum crusted onto the window pane.

"Good thing that sofa's comfortable then." Icarus called back, taking out the third cup and filling all three with the juice. After returning the bottle to the fridge he moved back into the main room. He placed two of the cups and the pills down on the table, taking the other cup over to Annah.

"There you go, think it's supposed to be some citrus fruit mix, couldn't tell you what fruits though," he smiled, offering the cup to her. "Shine, time to take your medicine." He turned to call out, wondering where she had gotten to. Actually he had a good idea what she was up to.

"Aww," the complaint came from down the hall before the girl came rushing back into the room with a bundle of her toys in her small arms, a myriad of wooden shapes and bits of metal, safely lacking any points. The only thing that would really be considered a to was the sole fox shaped plush toy on the top of the pile, although it's black tipped ears sagged and it's tail was torn from playing over the years. She carefully moved to deposit the toys on the free part of the sofa, turning then to face Icarus with her arms crossed in a defiant manner.

"You still haven’t given me back Bip or Rit yet." she told him, clearly unimpressed that her toys were still not in her possession.

"Medicine first, then you can show Annah your toys okay?" Icarus told her, taking the hinge and elephant out of his pocket. Bip was a new one but he knew Rit already so it wasn't hard to deduce that she had already managed to name the elephant figurine she had gotten. He placed them down on the table and waited for Shine to move over to him, which she did after a few moments considering the terms of her toys release. Icarus handed her the pills first, which she promptly swallowed one at a time, and then the drink, which she drained half of before handing it back to him. Once the routine was finished she sped over to the sofa and clambered carefully on it next to Annah with her two rescued toys in hand. Icarus shook his head a little with a smile before taking a drink himself and moving over to the pair.

Annah took the cup from Icarus' hand, with a nod of thanks. She took a sip and looked down at the various toys that Shine had just placed beside her. They really were a mixed bundle, the only similarity being the rounded edges where necessary. Annah thought about picking one up to have a closer look, but thought better of it - after all, she'd only really just met these people, and for all she knew, Shine might not like strangers fiddling with her things. She sat back into the sofa, enjoying the soft surface.

Watching the light-hearted skirmish between Icarus and Shine made Annah smile. Not that their initial disagreement caused her joy, but the simple interaction seemed so natural. She imagined that they had had many similar discussions in the past, when Shine had to take her medicine. She had thought briefly about what medicine it was, but then thought back to the bar when Icarus said about Shine's headaches - prevention is better than the cure, after all.

When Shine clambered onto the sofa, Annah regarded her with a smile. She absent-mindedly took a sip of the juice. "Mm, this is really good. Not as good as it used to be, though. Do you remember the last time you saw a real orange or lemon tree?" she looked to Icarus, her features slighlty softened by the rememberance of the Old Times.

Icarus looked up in thought for a moment before returning his eyes down again. "I don't know, been at least five years I reckon, maybe ten. Even then the thing was as dead as most of the stuff you'll find out in the wastes." He took a sip of his own juice, trying to recall the taste of real juice, something that was perhaps more of a fond childhood memory than it should have been.

Shine meanwhile had organised her toys happily, concentrating on two rounded metal plates. She clicked the pair together a few times, before holding them a ways apart. "Annah, Annah, look what I can do." she called as innocently as children do for attention. She waited a few moments, not really being able to tell if she was watching or not, before she closed her eyes. Feeling the cool metal in her fingers she focused herself on the pieces, activating her other 'gift'. Small sparks jumped between the two bits of metal as she charged the bits of metals slightly, a faint electrical current passing through them. The aura she saw as herself moved to include the bits of metal and the sparks in her vision. In an inexplicable way they felt like a part of her as her energy moved through them.

Icarus watched the display as well. As often as he saw it, it still both amazed him and filled him with fear. He had always worried about someone trying to exploit her gift, after all electricity wasn't cheap and yet this girl could seemingly produce it. He'd never tried to find out the extent of her powers, never wanted to. He knew that Annah wasn't likely to tell anyone if he asked her not to but still. She would be the first one she had let see Shine's talent.

Annah nodded, before taking a sip out of her own cup. Her concerned gaze lingered on Icarus for a moment, before also looking down.

Shine, meanwhile, was tapping the pieces of metal. Annah enjoyed the noise, but there was a harsh edge to it that made her cringe mentally, like the peak of a gunshot blast. When Shine spoke, Annah's head snapped up to look at her. The minute pause as Shine tried to determine whether she was being watched was curious - the slight concentrated look, her brow slightly furrowed. Annah's curiousity perked up as the child closed her eyes.

The spark and crackle from the electricity shocked Annah momentarily, before she remember where - and, in fact, when - she was. Thinking about the Old Times had put her in a strange sense of feeling, where what she was seeing seemed more like a dream than reality, like she'd wake up and be back in a hut on the outskirts of town with a gentle, clean breeze flowing through the open window. Annah noticed the small smile at the edge of Shine's mouth, perhaps so subconscious that she herself hadn't noticed it. Annah glanced up at Icarus, and saw that he was also watching Shine. She thought about what he might be thinking, and figured it was most likely something about his concern for the girl as she got older - she remembered previously, when Icarus had been almost fatherly in his protectiveness for her. Annah hadn't been friends with many fantastical mutants, but had seen the plight of more than a few... it troubled her deeply, but she had trust in Ica. Annah felt humbled by being able to view Shine's talent, and allowed herself a small smile of her own.

Icarus continued to watch on without saying anything for the time being. He noted Annah's smile glad to see she wasn't too shocked by the little ones ability. Even within their own kind they could find those who were outcast because of their bodies or abilities, of course it depended on those around them as some seemed to cling to the humanity they had if they were mostly human. Shine had been somewhat unlucky there, a mutant that looked perfectly human was eligible to be shunned by the extremes of both sides. Well as long as he was around he'd make sure to keep her safe, if the worst happened he hoped that she would find her way into Jack's care at least. His head shook slightly as he continued to watch the girls, no need to think any more on that tonight he told himself.

Shine kept up the little show for a while longer, sparks dancing past each other as they jumped the pieces of metal. The sparks slowly died down, the metal only buzzing faintly as Shine lowered the pieces to her lap. Her breathing was coming faster now as her body adjusted to the action it had undertaken. While it hadn't been much, in terms of what she had done before, even the smallest actions were enough to wear her down considerably at her young age. Perhaps as she grew older and her body became stronger she'd be able to do more. For the time being though she didn't want to tire herself out too much since she'd like to spend time with Annah before having to go to sleep. Placing the metal to her side, she took up the battered fox toy in her arms as she looked up to Annah with a healthy smile.

"Did you like it?" She asked ecstatic to know if the older girl had enjoyed the little show since she didn't often get to show people it.

When Icarus looked up, Annah met his gaze for a moment. Her smile was crooked in a charming manner, and her eyes seemed to sparkle as the sparks jumped before her. She looked down at Shine again, just as the small girl stopped the electric display. Annah's skin felt tingly; she could only it was due to static floating around the air. She brushed her arms with her hands and ran a hand through her hair, causing a quiet crackling noise.

"You're lucky to have such a cool talent, Shine," Annah smiled, "All I got was these extra fingers an' this rubbishy tail." Annah raised a hand and twiddled the fingers in demonstration, the few rings she wore twinkling in the light. She placed her hand back on her lap, the digits tapping out a tune as they had previously in the bar. Her eyebrows shot up as she remembered the other inherited trait: "I almost forgot, I'm kinda intolerant to bright sunshine. Kinda sucky, huh?" Anyone who knew Annah could tell that she was placing her trust in these people totally, if she hadn't been so sure she wouldn't have mentioned the sunshine allergy. Then again, she probably wouldn't have come into these people's home if she didn't trust them, and vice versa!

"Yay!" Shine cheered as she bounced up and down a little on the sofa a little, still holding the fox toy close. "Icarus doesn't like me showing people so I don't but I like doing it so I like showing people when I can." She smiled happily, making perfect sense to herself.

"I like tails, Kritty has a tail." She pointed out, holding the fox toy up by it's tail. After a few swings she went back to cuddling the toy, quite happy with herself at the moment.

"Heh, my old legs were not exactly the most fun either, sure I could move a little faster than most people but they were a little fragile." Icarus added after a moments pause to make sure Shine was done. "Nowadays I'm not even sure I count as much of a mutant any more, more metal than anything else. Not that being a Mek' gets you any less odd looks from the purists, but hey, can't be who or what you are what can ya be?" Icarus finished off the rest of his drink, moving back to place the cup on the table before turning back to Annah. He let his eyes wander over her again, taking more interest in her mutations.

"If your tail is giving you any grief I can have a look at it, you kinda get used to dealing with cybernetics when you rely on them." Between Shine and himself they'd probably kept his rig running as long as it had been, it wasn't exactly high grade stuff to begin with and spare parts weren't easy to come by. Shine's little application for her ability saved a lot of time and hassle as well, once you figured out how to interpret it.

Annah laughed softly at Shine's antics, swinging the fox around by its tail. "Well, Kritty must have a very strong tail, in that case! I'll give you a little chunk of knowledge, though: if you ever meet a real fox, make sure to just smile and bow. For the rest of the day you'll have the fox's luck! Just remember not to try and swing him by his tail," she grinned, stifling a small yawn. She looked up to Icarus.

"Delicate legs, eh? I guess it's useful that they're all replaced and stuff, now," she said, "I can see what you mean about the Purists thing, it makes me so angry when people try their hardest just to look like them because they're scared. Maybe a little bit of conveniently-placed clothing or some paint now and then to avoid unecessary trouble, or to help with a bit of spying, but never because of fear. They'll never get the message with people like that around."

Annah sighed and finished off her drink. She turned her head to glance at her tail, gave it a little wiggle, and looked back to Ica. "My tail is fine usually... I think it's just a bit of extra growth recently, making it irritable. There is a bit of skin that's starting to become exposed at the top though, which I guess could do with some work... my suppliers have cut out on me recently, unfortunately." Annah rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. "Some people are so unreliable," she said, to noone in particular.

Shine nodded enthusiastically, although it didn't actually strike her that she wouldn't have the vaguest idea if something was a fox without touching it. Even then it'd have to be a pretty deformed fox to meet what she saw through Kritty. Maybe to be on the safe side she better start smiling and bowing to things, she'd get it right that way for sure.

"Don't let the size of these things fool you, they're about as delicate as glass when they want to be. All I can afford though and between me and Shine we keep them working." Icarus sighed, giving a nod to Annah's response. No point in starting fights but no point in hiding away because some bigots care more about appearance than people. Guess that's the way of the world now though, the more human you look the more you want to dissociate yourself with the real mutants. Barring notable exceptions of course, but more and more it seems like people just want to avoid it all." His human hand clenched a little, he'd normally have a lot more to say on this but Shine was in the room so he wasn't about to start on it, focusing instead on Annah's tail troubles.

"I could have a word with the guy who maintains these things," he gestured to his legs and arm, "Might be able to get you a slightly better deal since we go back a ways and he's got no plans on skipping out due to the purists or anything any time soon. In the mean time I have painkillers if it's giving you too much grief." He shrugged a little, not entirely sure he'd be able to do too much with what he had laying around. Was far more delicate work than what he had to do with his own rig, generally involving a hammer or solid hitting.

"Mm, it'd be nice if appearance wasn't really an issue. Then again, I hear it was a problem before... this all happened," she gestured around her, to indicate the world they found themselves living in at present. She gave it a non-commital shrug, feeling a lack of energy to dicuss the matter further. Tail troubles seemed more urgent at the moment, anyway.

"Some painkillers would be nice, thanks. It'd help me sleep - I can't even begin to count how many sleepless nights I've found myself without pain relief," she smiled weakly, "A good deal on parts would be nice, maybe some scrap metal and bolts and the like. So long as I have the bits, I'm alright with sorting something out." True, doing fairly delicate work on your tailbone could be tricky, but she trusted her own work far more than anybody else's... at least if it broke, she could pin-point what and why, and fix it herself. Much handier if you're trying to dodge some trouble and something comes loose. Still gave her the head-to-toe shiver when it happened, though, like when a wobbly tooth became all the more wobbly when you're poking it with your tongue.

"People will always find something to fight over." Icarus pointed out, at the shrug, feeling that was the easiest way to settle that line of conversation. It was unfortunate but that just seemed to be how the world worked. Probably the way it always would as well, even if all of their other plights were no longer a problem. At the mention of painkillers he gave Annah a quick nod and moved off to the kitchen to dig some out, returning quickly with a pair of tablets in his hand.

"Those should do the trick, they are a little on the strong side though so you may want to take one first and give it a bit to settle in to see if it's enough." He told her, holding out the tablets in his hand. "I'm sure I can get something arranged for you, he's a good guy for the most part, though he can stir up trouble when he wants to. Thankfully he keeps his business trouble free." Icarus sighed a little, again it wasn't like many people could make an honest living these days with how everything was.

Shine meanwhile had curled up of the sofa, nodding off a little by herself since the conversation seemed to have moved away. Her own little thoughts keeping her entertained and sight of the friendly auras in the room letting her smile happily.
